Since Gary Vee pronouced that TikTok could be the next big thing there have been so many people giving TikTok a go to see how they can use it to help grow their brands. For those of with kids and teenagers we have been subjected to this platform for a while now but there are still many out there who are asking what is this TikTok thing?
TikTok is a social network originally created in China. You can create and share short videos, edit them, add music and post in on the app.
If you remember Vine (2013) created by Twitter, it’s actually very similar! Most of the popular genres on TikTok are comedy, lip singing, cringe videos and cooking instructions.
TikTok Audience
The app has grown tremendously over the last year. It has more than 800 million downloads and it’s estimated that over 500 million people use it. This means TikTok is larger than Twitter and Pinterest.
Its largest audience are people between 16 and 24, making up 41% of the total user-base. This means, if you’re thinking of using it for marketing, make sure your target is indeed very young.
Yes, it’s highly probable that older people will soon join TikTok as well, however at the moment there are currently better social networks that might work better if you want to target that audience.
TikTok Marketing
So how can this crazy platform be useful for marketing?
Currently, there are four main ways to use marketing on TikTok
- You can create your own channel and use it to share original, fun videos about your brand.
- You can work with influencers, who have a better understanding of the platform and let’s not forget that people trust content more when it comes from influencers and not directly from brands.
- You can use paid advertising. TikTok started adding the ads very recently, so it’s a bit early to measure its impact yet but predictions suggest the app will just get more popular and established over time.
- You can use hashtag challenges. Challenges are an essential feature of TikTok’s community. Users take up a challenge making a video accordingly and uploading to their channles. The challenges are give a #-tag name so it’s easier to track.
